CHILDRESS COUNTY, TEXAS — Trooper Sergio Romero, 27, of the Texas Department of Public Safety, died in a traffic crash on June 17 during an attempted vehicle stop, according to the agency.
Romero was conducting a traffic stop when a tractor-trailer pulled in front of his patrol vehicle. The collision occurred on a state roadway in Childress County, and Romero died at the scene. No additional details about the circumstances of the traffic stop or the tractor-trailer’s actions were immediately released.
Romero had served with the Department of Public Safety since 2025 and had prior law enforcement experience from other agencies. He is survived by his wife and two young sons.
“Trooper Sergio Romero served the people of his community and the state of Texas with courage, integrity and selfless devotion,” DPS Colonel Freeman F. Martin said. “Our hearts break alongside his family, friends, fellow Troopers and all who loved him. We will never forget the ultimate sacrifice he made in service of his fellow Texans.”
The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating the crash. The agency did not immediately release information about the tractor-trailer’s driver or the status of any citations or charges related to the incident.
