HEFLIN, ALA. — The Cleburne County Sheriff’s Office has received a traffic safety equipment grant providing radar technology and software to support data-driven traffic enforcement and public safety initiatives across the county.
The ATS Gives Back Grant provides a Shield12 radar speed sign and two years of complimentary TraffiCloud software. The grant is administered through ATS Traffic Solutions’ support program for law enforcement agencies addressing roadway safety concerns.
The radar speed sign serves a dual function: displaying vehicle speed to encourage motorists to reduce speed while simultaneously collecting operational data on traffic patterns. The system records vehicle speeds, traffic volume, and the times of day vehicles travel through monitored areas.
According to the sheriff’s office, the system does not collect personal identification information, take photographs, or capture license plate numbers. The system is designed to provide deputies with aggregated traffic data rather than individual vehicle identification.
The collected data enables deputies to identify locations where speeding may pose a safety risk, evaluate complaints from residents regarding traffic concerns, determine where traffic enforcement resources should be deployed, and measure the effectiveness of traffic safety enforcement and public awareness initiatives implemented in the county.
The radar sign provides portability, allowing deputies to deploy the equipment in different areas of the county as traffic concerns arise. This enables the office to gather location-specific data on speeding and traffic volume patterns in areas where residents have expressed safety concerns.
