The detective was working near Manhattan’s Penn Station when he heard the gunfire and quickly went to help the wounded bystander.

An NYPD officer fashioned a tourniquet to staunch the bleeding of a bystander who was stuck by a stray bullet outside Penn Station on Monday.
Det. Nicholas White was on duty a block away when he heard a gunshot coming from the Manhattan train station, WABC-TV reports. He quickly reached the 58-year-old victim, who was texting outside when gunfire erupted from an argument between two men.
The bystander was wounded in the leg, and White was able to use a tourniquet to keep the victim from bleeding out until paramedics arrived.
“He was calm,” White told WABC. “At first, he didn’t know he was shot. So then when I did my examination. I realized he was shot, and he was just in mild pain surprisingly. It could’ve been much worse.”
The victim was taken to Bellevue Hospital, and he was expected to recover, the New York Daily News reports.
