CHICAGO, IL — A Chicago man has been charged with murder in the April 25 hospital shooting that killed a police officer and wounded another while he was in custody for a suspected robbery, authorities said.
The suspect, identified by prosecutors as 26-year-old Alphanso Talley, is accused of opening fire on officers inside Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital in the Lincoln Square neighborhood after being brought in for medical treatment. One officer, 38-year-old John Bartholomew, a 10-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, was fatally shot. A second officer, 57, was critically injured.
According to prosecutors, Talley had been arrested earlier in the day on an armed robbery allegation and transported to the hospital. While he was being prepared for a CT scan, he allegedly produced a handgun and shot the officers before fleeing the scene. He was later apprehended.
Investigators have recovered multiple firearms in connection with the case, and federal prosecutors filed charges this week against a woman accused of lying on a gun-purchase form for the firearm believed used in the attack. Authorities continue to examine how the weapon came into the hospital despite security screenings.
Talley remains jailed pending court proceedings, including a mental health evaluation and hearings on related charges.
