A Texas deputy constable was shot and killed and two others were wounded in an ambush during an extra security shift they were working at a bar early Saturday.

The shooting happened at around 2:15 a.m. at a bar in north Houston, KHOU-TV reports. Three Harris County Precinct 4 deputy constables were working an additional security job at the bar when they went outside to look into a disturbance.

Police believe the incident was a possible robbery, and the deputies were arresting a suspect. That’s when someone with a rifle opened fire from behind.

All three deputies were struck by the gunfire. It’s not clear if the deputies were able to return fire.

The deputies were taken to the hospital, where one of them died. One deputy was wounded in the back and was rushed into surgery. The third deputy was shot in the foot and required surgery.

“It’s probably one of the toughest things I’ve done in my career,” said Harris County Precinct 4 Constable Mark Herman about the shooting.

A person of interest was taken into custody by police. It’s unclear if the individual is a suspect or a witness.
