NEW YORK — An off-duty NYPD detective was stabbed and wounded during an attempted robbery in the Bronx on Friday, according to the New York Daily News.

The detective was retrieving something from the trunk of his car parked on East 208th Street near Steuben Avenue in the Norwood neighborhood around 2 p.m. when two men approached him on a bicycle and tried to steal his gold chain, according to law enforcement sources. “It was that kind of job,” one police source said. “They rolled up on him on a bike and tried to snatch his chain.”
The 33-year-old detective was stabbed up to seven times, sustaining wounds to his neck and torso, as he fought off the attackers, sources said. The two suspects then fled on an e-bike, and the detective gave chase for about two blocks before collapsing near Rochambeau Avenue. “He got stabbed, and he was chasing the guy,” said a witness who asked not to be named. “He chased the guy, and that’s where he collapsed, in front of the building where I was sitting. We know him from the neighborhood, so we know he’s a cop.”
Medics transported the detective to Jacobi Hospital, where he is expected to survive. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch and Mayor Zohran Mamdani visited him at the hospital. “I visited the detective and his family at Jacobi Hospital with Police Commissioner Tisch,” Mamdani wrote on social media. “He is thankfully in stable condition, and I am hoping for his quick and complete recovery. I am confident that the NYPD will identify and apprehend the suspects and that the people responsible will be held to account.”
The suspects fled without taking the chain, which was found on the ground near the detective’s car along with his backpack, police said. Officers are continuing to search for them.
According to police statistics current as of Sunday, felony assaults in the Bronx’s 52nd Precinct, where the stabbing occurred, are up 6% this year, with 739 incidents compared with 694 during the same period in 2025 — a steeper increase than the citywide rise of less than 1%. Robberies in the precinct are down 3% so far this year, while robberies citywide have fallen 12%.
