WARM SPRINGS, Ga. — A Warm Springs police officer was fatally shot Sept. 1 while completing an unrelated traffic stop, prompting a manhunt that ended the following day when the suspect was found injured from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
Officer Chris Fisher was shot while sitting in his patrol cruiser, the GBI said in a statement. The agency identified the suspect as Jimmie Steverson.
Steverson was located Sept. 2 by the Anderson County, South Carolina, Sheriff’s Office during a traffic stop, where he was found as a passenger in the vehicle. Law enforcement discovered he had sustained an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound and transported him to a local hospital, according to the GBI.
Records show Fisher was the arresting officer when Steverson was taken into custody days before the shooting on charges of possession and distribution of marijuana, possession of a firearm or knife during the commission of certain crimes, and obstruction of law enforcement officers by threats or violence.
The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing.
