LOS ANGELES, CA — A protester was arrested after allegedly reaching into a Los Angeles Police Department patrol vehicle and spraying a chemical agent toward two officers during a demonstration, authorities said.

The encounter unfolded Sunday afternoon in the Pico-Union neighborhood, where officers assigned to the LAPD’s Central Bureau were monitoring a protest, according to local reports.

Police said the suspect reached into a parked patrol unit and deployed a chemical agent in the direction of the officers. The officers were not reported as injured, and they detained the individual near the vehicle.

The protester was taken into custody and booked on charges related to assault with a deadly weapon and interfering with law enforcement duties, according to LAPD.

LAPD’s Central Bureau is conducting follow-up investigation into the circumstances of the incident as the charges proceed through the legal process, police said.
