KANSAS CITY, MO — Autonomy-focused drone manufacturer Skydio said it will invest $3.5 billion to expand its U.S. manufacturing footprint, aiming to increase domestic production of unmanned aircraft for government and commercial use, officials announced.

The plan includes construction of a new factory in Missouri that will house advanced manufacturing technology to produce Skydio’s drones, company leaders and government representatives said at a kickoff event.

Skydio executives said the expanded facilities are intended to support defense, public safety, infrastructure inspection and other sectors that rely on unmanned aerial systems manufactured in the United States.

The project is expected to create thousands of jobs across manufacturing, engineering and support functions as production ramps up in the coming years.

Federal, state and local leaders who participated in the announcement emphasized the significance of onshore production for critical aviation technology and economic growth.
