A 26-year-old uniformed NYPD officer was injured in Manhattan’s West Village on Friday morning after being struck by an out-of-control vehicle. The incident occurred around 7:12 a.m. at the intersection of West 13th Street and Seventh Avenue.
Sequence of Events
According to police reports, the officer was walking toward his parked patrol car when a black Dodge Charger, driven by a 43-year-old man, was traveling southbound on Seventh Avenue. The driver attempted to change lanes and collided with a sanitation street sweeper. The impact caused the Charger to lose control, striking the officer and pinning him between the Charger and his police cruiser.
Eyewitness Account
Abi Aguirre, 21, an employee at Bagel RX located across the street from the crash site, reviewed surveillance footage of the incident. She noted that the Charger appeared to be speeding before the collision. “It was pretty fast, and then he crashed into a sanitation car. He crashed over there and then he’s doing circles and then he crashed out with a police car,” Aguirre recounted. She added that the officer attempted to evade the out-of-control vehicle but was unable to do so in time.

Both the officer and the driver sustained injuries and were transported to nearby hospitals. The officer was reported to be in stable condition. The driver was also treated for non-life-threatening injuries and was taken into custody, with charges pending.
