MONTREAL, QUEBEC — Officer Mohamed Lamine Benredouane, 34, was killed during a targeted shooting attack on police at a hotel in Montreal’s Côte-des-Neiges neighborhood on June 22, marking the first fatal shooting of a Montreal Police Service officer in 24 years.
Police responded to the hotel after a caller reported observing a person pointing a gun from an upstairs window. Upon arrival, the suspect fired more than two dozen shots, including at officers, according to Police Chief Fady Dagher. Officers returned fire and killed the suspect at the scene.
The second fatality was Michel Mizrahi, an Israeli citizen, who was killed while helping other residents evacuate the hotel. Authorities confirmed the shooting was a targeted attack on police rather than an indiscriminate shooting.
Benredouane had served with the Montreal Police Service since 2021. The police service released a statement honoring his memory, stating “His sense of duty, commitment and professionalism will forever stay in our memories.”
Investigators are examining a more than 100-page manifesto that law enforcement believes may have been written by the gunman. The document reportedly contains references to incel ideology. Police have not released additional details about the manifesto’s contents or any other potential motives for the attack.
Residents in proximity to the hotel were ordered to shelter in place for more than an hour while law enforcement secured the area and investigated the scene.
