LYNNFIELD, MA — Massachusetts State Police Trooper Kevin Trainor was killed early Wednesday morning when his cruiser was struck by a wrong-way driver on Route 1 in Lynnfield, state police officials said.
Authorities said the crash occurred shortly after 2 a.m. near the Saugus-Lynnfield line as Trainor responded to reports of a vehicle traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of Route 1. The trooper’s cruiser collided head-on with a Jeep operated by the wrong-way driver.
Trainor, 30, was transported from the scene for emergency medical treatment but later died from his injuries, officials said. The driver of the Jeep, identified by prosecutors as 50-year-old Hernan Marrero of Roslindale, was pronounced dead at the scene.
State Police Colonel Geoffrey Noble said Trainor joined the agency in 2023 after previously working as a corrections officer. Officials described him as a dedicated public servant who also served as a field training officer and member of the Troop A Community Action Team.
Governor Maura Healey and other state leaders issued statements honoring Trainor’s service, noting he was responding to protect the public from the wrong-way driver when the fatal collision occurred. The incident remains under investigation by the Massachusetts State Police and local prosecutors.
