Investigators released security and body camera videos this week that detail a harrowing shooting last month at Denver’s jail when a suspect opened fire with a gun he had hidden away, seriously wounding one officer in the neck.

The shooting happened shortly before 11 p.m. Nov. 28 as Denver Police Officers Jordan Archuleta and Alicia Martinez were bringing David Cheeseman to the Downtown Detention Center, KDVR-TV reports. Cheeseman had been arrested in connection with a vehicle theft, drug possession and felon possession of a “black high capacity handgun,” which officers seized.

As Cheesman, who was handcuffed, was about to be processed into the jail, he pulled out a second gun that hadn’t been discovered during a search. Cheesman opened fire, shooting Archuleta once through the neck.

In the compiled videos, a third officer in a nearby cruiser gets out and returns fire. Cheeseman was shot multiple times and remains in the hospital paralyzed, according to his wife.

Charges are still pending against Cheesman while he’s hospitalized. The shooting is under investigation, and Archuleta and Martinez could face disciplinary action for not securing the second weapon.
