The Cañon City Police Department is investigating what appears to have been a suicide attempt Thursday in the lobby of the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office, located at 100 Justice Center Road.

Cañon City Police Commander Elliott VanDyke in a press release stated that officers were dispatched at about 12:30 p.m. to the FCSO regarding a suspected suicide attempt.

“The victim in this case appears to have suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the lobby of the Sheriff’s Office,” the release states.

As officers arrived on the scene, they discovered an unresponsive individual being treated by deputies.

The individual, a 73-year-old Cañon City resident, was transported to St. Thomas More Hospital and later delivered by Flight for Life to Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs.

VanDyke said the man reportedly is listed in critical condition. He is not an employee of the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office, he said.

The lobby of the sheriff’s office was closed for the remainder of the day after this incident.

Investigators with the CCPD are actively investigating this incident with the assistance of the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Cañon City Police Investigations Unit at 719-276-5600.
