The father of a slain Indiana police officer has become a reserve police officer, and he will carry his fallen son’s badge number.
Matthew Shahnavaz was sworn in Wednesday as a reserve officer for the Elwood Police Department, the agency stated in a social media post. His son, Noah Shahnavaz, was fatally shot during a July traffic stop less than a year after he joined the force.
The elder Shahnavaz completed his 40-hour pre-basic training course this week. In honor of his fallen son, Shahnavaz will now have his badge number, 139.
“(W)e are excited for him to help live out Noah’s legacy at our department!” a post on the department’s Facebook page stated.
Noah Shahnavaz had been with the department 11 months when he was shot and killed. Before becoming a police officer, he served in the military for five years.
