A former Virginia police officer spent Thanksgiving placing crosses to honor the six victims who lost their lives in a mass shooting at a Walmart earlier this week.

“You never expect something like this to happen this close to home,” Matt Cilento, a former Chesapeake police officer who now owns a towing company, told WTVR-TV.

Cilento erected six crosses Thursday as part of a growing memorial outside the Walmart where a store manager, Andre Bing, shot and killed six employees before killing himself Tuesday. Three people were injured in the shooting, with one in critical condition and another released from the hospital.

“Everybody in the City of Chesapeake is here to support them,” Cilento said. “You know, it’s not just their family and friends. … This affects everybody within the community.”

Bing had legally purchased the 9mm handgun he used in the shooting at a store the day of the incident. A note found on Bing’s phone stated that store associates had harassed him and that his “true intent was never to murder anyone believe it or not.”

Police are still investigating the shooting.
