WALTHALL COUNTY, MS — A sheriff’s deputy in Mississippi was fatally shot Wednesday while responding to a reported domestic disturbance, and the suspect was killed in a gunfight with law enforcement, authorities said.

Walthall County Sheriff’s Office officials identified the deputy as a member of their force who was among the first to arrive at a residence in rural Walthall County when the shooting occurred in the afternoon. The deputy was struck by gunfire and later died.

Two other deputies were injured during the exchange of gunfire with the woman suspect; both were transported to a hospital and treated for their injuries, officials said.

Responding officers returned fire, killing the woman at the scene. Law enforcement agencies secured the area as investigators collected evidence and interviewed potential witnesses.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation has been called in to assist with the ongoing inquiry into the circumstances of the shooting and the domestic disturbance, and no further details were immediately released.
