(PORTLAND, OR —) Portland Police Bureau officers were shot and wounded Monday night by a suspect who opened fire during a response to a reported weapons threat and subsequently fled the scene, authorities said.

Officers assigned to the bureau’s North Precinct responded about 8:21 p.m. to a report of a threat involving a weapon near Northeast 21st Avenue and Northeast Clackamas Street, where they located an individual who then fired at responding officers.

Both officers were struck and transported by ambulance to a local hospital, where they were treated and later reported to be in stable condition, police said.

Following the shooting, the suspect fled on foot, prompting the establishment of a perimeter and an active search that involved the Special Emergency Reaction Team, Crisis Negotiation Team, Air Support Unit, unmanned aircraft systems and K9 teams.

Police described the suspect as a white male in his mid-30s with facial hair, wearing a black baseball cap, black jacket and gray hooded sweatshirt, and believed to be armed with a handgun and a knife. Authorities have urged the public not to approach the individual and to contact police with any information.

The Portland Police Homicide Unit is leading the investigation, which remains active as officers continue efforts to locate the suspect.
