An Eagan officer critically injured in a squad crash “has made steady improvements,” the police department said Thursday.

Kade Eggum was responding March 14 just after 5 a.m. to a medical incident of a male who was unconscious and not breathing.

Eggum merged onto Interstate 35E from Pilot Knob Road and was traveling in the right lane of the northbound freeway with his squad’s emergency lights activated. He attempted to make a left turn at the median cross-over at Yankee Doodle Road and collided with a semi truck, which was also traveling north, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

Other public safety officials continued to the original medical call and attempted lifesaving measures, but the male died, Eagan police said.

Eggum was taken by ambulance to the hospital.

“He still has a lot of recovery ahead of him but appears to be doing remarkably well,” Eagan police said in Thursday’s statement. “Officer Eggum has been surrounded by family as they pray for a full recovery. His family would like to express their deepest gratitude for the overwhelming amount of support they have received over the past week.”
