VIRGINIA BEACH, VA. — A Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel police cruiser flipped and landed partially on a guardrail Wednesday afternoon, causing a temporary shutdown of southbound traffic, officials said.

The single-vehicle wreck occurred about 12:40 p.m. near the one-mile post on the southbound side of the bridge tunnel, according to a bridge-tunnel spokesperson.

Video and images from the scene showed the cruiser dangling over the edge of the bridge’s guardrail following the rollover, with the guardrail itself damaged in the crash.

The officer driving the vehicle was taken to a local hospital for evaluation of injuries that were not deemed serious, officials said.

All southbound traffic was initially stopped while crews brought in a crane to right the cruiser; lanes reopened later with one lane closed to allow for inspection and guardrail repairs.

No cause for the crash had been released as of late Wednesday afternoon, and authorities continue to review the incident.
