YELM, Wash. — A Thurston County Sheriff’s Office deputy shot and wounded an armed man on the morning of June 4, 2026, after the man drew a firearm and charged at the deputy while the deputy was attempting to manage the scene of a fully engulfed vehicle fire at a property in the 149th Lane Southeast area near Yelm, according to Thurston County Sheriff Derek Sanders.

The incident began at approximately 9 a.m. when a TCSO deputy was dispatched to the property at the request of the Yelm Fire Department. The property has been formally flagged in law enforcement systems as a location with a documented history of violent criminal activity, a designation that prohibits fire department personnel from responding there without law enforcement on scene. Sheriff Sanders publicly characterized the property as a known drug compound, describing it as a site with ongoing activity involving stolen vehicles, drug trafficking, and weapons trafficking.

Upon arrival, body-worn camera footage shows the deputy issuing commands to a man standing near the burning vehicle — who was holding a garden hose — instructing him to step back from the fire. The man instead drew a firearm and charged toward the deputy. The deputy fired multiple rounds, striking the suspect. Responding TCSO deputies and officers from the Yelm Police Department subsequently recovered a second firearm from the suspect at the scene, administered first aid, and coordinated his transport to a hospital. The suspect’s injuries were reported as non-life-threatening. No law enforcement personnel or bystanders were injured.

The deputy involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave in accordance with standard departmental protocol while an independent investigation is conducted. The Washington State Office of Independent Investigations was initially notified of the shooting but declined jurisdiction, transferring investigative authority to the Region 3 Critical Incident Investigation Team. The Thurston County Sheriff’s Office will not participate in the investigation. Upon its conclusion, the case will be forwarded to the Thurston County Prosecutor’s Office for review.

Body-worn camera footage of the incident is confirmed to exist and will be reviewed and released to the public consistent with TCSO’s Body Worn Camera Program policies. The June 4 shooting is the second officer-involved shooting in which TCSO has been involved in 2026. On April 28, three TCSO deputies fatally shot a suspect who was allegedly firing at them from a backyard in the Olympia area following a police pursuit; the Office of Independent Investigations is handling that case.
