The incident unfolded April 25 at Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital, where officers were escorting 26-year-old Alphanso Talley—who had been arrested earlier for robbery—to the emergency department for medical evaluation.
Prosecutors said Talley concealed a handgun beneath a blanket and, moments before undergoing a CT scan, produced the weapon and opened fire on the officers. One officer, 38-year-old John Bartholomew, died from his injuries, and a second officer, 57, remained in critical condition, police reported.
Talley was ordered held without bail Monday in Cook County on a range of charges including first-degree murder, attempted murder and aggravated battery of a peace officer, officials said. Investigators are continuing to examine how Talley was able to bring the firearm into the hospital despite security screening and supervision.
The investigation remains active as law enforcement and prosecutors prepare for upcoming court proceedings.
