The Briefing
- • A frozen security zone was established around Madison Square Garden beginning at 4 p.m. on June 9, 2026, for NBA Finals Game 3, as President Donald Trump attended the New York Knicks’ home game against the San Antonio Spurs.

- • No watch party was permitted outside the Garden for Game 3; Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced alternate watch party locations at Bryant Park, Central Park, and Brooklyn Bowl.
NEW YORK, N.Y. — The U.S. Secret Service and the New York City Police Department implemented a full security lockdown in Midtown Manhattan on June 9, 2026, establishing a frozen perimeter around Madison Square Garden for NBA Finals Game 3 as President Donald Trump attended the New York Knicks’ home game.
The frozen zone was enforced beginning at 4 p.m. — at the onset of the evening rush hour — and encompassed the area from West 30th to West 35th streets between Sixth and Eighth avenues. Vehicular traffic on Seventh and Eighth avenues was prohibited for the duration of the event. Access to the secured perimeter was limited to individuals holding game tickets, commuter rail passes for Penn Station, or business credentials for nearby establishments. Five NYPD checkpoints were established at key entry points along Sixth Avenue at West 32nd and West 33rd streets, Seventh Avenue at West 29th Street, and Eighth Avenue at West 30th and West 34th streets. Backpacks, bags, and purses were prohibited for anyone entering the zone; an exception was made for bags carried by Penn Station commuters entering through that specific access point.
Matt McCool, special agent in charge of the Secret Service’s New York field office, outlined the security posture alongside NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch at a briefing at One Police Plaza. McCool said the protective deployment encompassed drone surveillance, counter-drone technology, protective intelligence teams, and specialized tactical resources. “From the ground to the sky, the Secret Service and our partners have it covered,” McCool stated. He urged game ticket holders to arrive at least two hours before the 8:30 p.m. tipoff and be prepared for magnetometer screening. Tisch noted the lockdown would remain in effect for the full duration of the game regardless of when the president departed, and compared the security footprint to NYPD’s annual New Year’s Eve operation in Times Square.
The heightened security posture for Game 3 followed a series of public safety incidents during the two previous Knicks Finals watch parties held outside the Garden. After Game 1, revelers jumped on a passing ambulance, an NYPD chief was punched in the face, and a woman’s hair caught fire and was extinguished by a nearby bystander — incidents that resulted in eight arrests. The Game 2 watch party, which drew an estimated 7,000 people to West 33rd Street, resulted in 26 additional arrests and summonses for offenses including assault and selling counterfeit merchandise; one officer was repeatedly struck while attempting to restrain a fan who breached a security barrier. No outdoor watch party was permitted outside MSG for Game 3. Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced alternative viewing locations for fans at Bryant Park, with capacity for up to 5,000 people, as well as events at Central Park and Brooklyn Bowl. A watch party outside MSG is expected to be permitted again for Game 4.
