DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — An Ormond Beach police officer was shot in the leg with his own service weapon Sept. 20 by a suspect he was guarding at a hospital, according to Police Chief Jakari Young and WESH.
The incident began earlier that day when an elderly couple checked out a burglary alarm at Daytona College and discovered a suspicious vehicle and items inside the building that did not belong there. According to dispatch audio of the 911 call, a suspect exiting the building got into his vehicle and struck the woman with it before getting out and hitting and kicking both victims. The couple was taken to a hospital in critical condition.
Officers later located and arrested the suspect, who was transported to a hospital for a medical evaluation. While preparing to undergo an MRI, the suspect got into a physical altercation with the Ormond Beach officer guarding him and was able to pull the officer’s handgun partially from its holster, firing a shot that struck the officer in the leg, Young told WESH.
The officer is expected to recover. The suspect has been charged with attempted first-degree murder, resisting an officer with violence, aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, battery on a law enforcement officer and assault on a law enforcement officer.
