NEW YORK — An NYPD officer and a 34-year-old bystander sustained minor injuries after another officer’s holstered service weapon accidentally discharged inside a Brooklyn subway station, police said Friday.
The gun fired while holstered inside the Kingston-Throop Avenue subway station around 4:41 p.m. Thursday, according to police. NYPD officials initially said Thursday that no injuries resulted from the discharge, but further investigation revealed that bullet fragments struck a police officer and the bystander.
The woman was struck in the ear; it was not immediately clear where on the officer’s body the fragment hit. Both were taken to a local hospital in stable condition and have since been released.
The two officers involved in the incident were placed on modified duty, which required them to surrender their firearms and shields. The NYPD’s Force Investigation Division is investigating the discharge.
