The encounter occurred when the off-duty corrections officer encountered a suspect at a public location and observed the individual attempting to seize the firearm of an on-duty police officer.

The corrections officer intervened, preventing the suspect from gaining control of the weapon, authorities said, and helped ensure the safety of the on-duty officer during the encounter.
