FULTON COUNTY, NY—State police Monday released the identity of a trooper who died while working a marine detail on the Great Sacandaga Lake in the Adirondack Mountains.
James Monda, 45, was on duty when he “went into the water” at a boat launch in Fulton County at about 4 p.m. Sunday, according to a news release from State Police Superintendent Kevin Bruen.
Monda did not resurface, Bruen said. He was taken to Nathan Littauer Hospital in Gloversville, where he died.
It was unclear why or how Monda went into the water or whether others witnessed the incident or attempted to help. Calls and emails to the state police for more information were not immediately answered.
Monda had been a trooper with the state police for 18 years, serving much of that time in Troop G, Bruen said. Troop G serves Albany, Fulton, Hamilton, Montgomery, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, Warren and Washington counties.
Monda is survived by his fiancée and parents.
