KANSAS CITY, Kan. — A Kansas City, Kansas, police officer stabbed a man several times with a knife during a struggle Tuesday afternoon in which the man allegedly tried to grab the officer’s gun, according to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.
The confrontation followed an earlier incident in which a suspect fled a traffic stop and ran over an officer’s foot. Police later located a vehicle linked to that incident in the 2900 block of State Avenue and approached it, directing a man inside to get out. The man complied, then ran from officers, according to the KBI.
Two officers caught up to the man and confronted him. As they wrestled with him, he grabbed at an officer’s gun on his belt; the officer then stabbed the man multiple times, authorities said. A second officer struck the man with a baton before he was taken into custody.
One of the officers broke his hand during the struggle, was treated at a hospital and released. The man who was stabbed was reported in stable condition and expected to survive.
The KBI is investigating the incident.
