A law enforcement officer was shot while serving a search warrant at a New Jersey home on Friday — sparking an hours-long standoff with the barricaded suspect, authorities and reports said.

The detective with the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s office “sustained a lower-body gunshot injury in the encounter” that precipitated the standoff, the agency said in a statement on Twitter.

The officer was treated at a local hospital and released, the prosecutor’s office said.

The detective had been trying to bring a suspect into custody in connection with a murder investigation at around 5 p.m. when he was shot, sources told NBC4.

No shots were fired by police, the prosecutor’s office said.

The standoff outside the home on Chelsea Avenue in Long Branch was still ongoing hours later, at around 8:15 p.m., with a heavy police presence in the area.

Officials said that they do not believe there is a threat to the community.

“We are asking that members of the public and media stay clear of the area for now,” prosecutors said around 7 p.m. “The situation has been contained to this area, and there is not believed to be any danger to the public at large.”

Agencies responding include members of the MCPO, Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office, Monmouth County Emergency Response Team and Long Branch and other local police departments.

Police said more information will become available as the situation unfolds.

NJ Transit temporarily cut rail services northbound and southbound to Long Branch while law enforcement respond.
