Mich. Deputy Rescues Disabled Veteran Stuck in Swamp for Days

March 2, 2023 A Kalkaska County sheriff’s deputy searched on foot to find a missing disabled veteran who had been following his GPS when his van became stuck in a swamp for two days.

KALKASKA COUNTY, MI – A missing disabled veteran was recently found in a Northern Michigan swamp.

According to the Kalkaska County Sheriff’s Office, the man went missing while driving a silver Toyota van. Deputies were dispatched after the man was able to call dispatch at 10:36 p.m. on Feb. 18.

Sgt. Paul Belanger responded to the area of Moorsetown Road and Six Point Road in Garfield Township. He began searching on foot and located the disabled veteran, who was asleep in his vehicle at the base of a hill in a swamp.

The man told Belanger he had been following his GPS and got stuck. He also said he had attempted to signal passing snowmobilers for two days without success.

He was taken to a local hotel by Kalkaska EMS where he received treatment, deputies said.

The Garfield Fire Department also responded to the scene.
