FAIRFIELD, TEXAS — A Fairfield Police Department officer has been fired and charged with a felony after the heat-related death of police K-9 Farock, a German Shepherd serving with the department.
K-9 Farock died June 12 from a heat-related illness, according to a statement released by the Fairfield Police Department on June 26.
Following an internal investigation, the officer was terminated June 18. The Fairfield Police Department did not release additional details regarding the circumstances of the K-9’s death at the time of the initial announcement.
The Ennis Police Department, which is investigating the incident, confirmed that a warrant was issued for the former officer on a charge of cruelty to non-livestock animals, a third-degree felony. The officer, who had served with the Fairfield Police Department for two years, surrendered on the warrant and was taken into custody and booked into jail.
The officer has since posted bond and been released from custody pending further court proceedings.
