MONTGOMERY, AL — Alabama lawmakers approved legislation that toughens criminal penalties for fleeing from law enforcement and establishes college scholarship support for children of officers killed in the line of duty, state officials said.

The new laws were passed as part of the state’s budget package and reflect changes to current statutes governing vehicle pursuits and evasion, increasing potential prison sentences and fines for individuals convicted of fleeing police.

In addition to enhanced penalties, the legislation creates a scholarship program administered by the Alabama Student Assistance Program to provide financial support to dependents of peace officers who die in the line of duty.

Supporters of the measures said the changes aim to improve public and officer safety by deterring high-risk fleeing behavior and assist families of officers who make the ultimate sacrifice.

The laws take effect upon enactment, and relevant state agencies are tasked with implementing the scholarship framework and updated enforcement provisions in coordination with local law enforcement partners.
