LAS VEGAS, NEV. — Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Officer Austin Abdelnabi, 30, died August 4 following a gunbattle with an armed suspect in the east valley, representing the department’s first line-of-duty death since October 2022.
Metro responded at 3:57 p.m. to a business in the 4500 block of East Tropicana Avenue following a caller’s report that a person appeared intoxicated while waving a firearm. Officers located the suspect on Mountain Vista Street near Interstate 11, south of the original call location.
Captain Adam Seely stated that the suspect “immediately opened fire upon officers” upon police contact. At least one officer returned fire toward the suspect. Abdelnabi, a responding officer at the initial scene, sustained fatal gunshot injuries during the exchange.
Emergency personnel established a perimeter and responded to render aid to the officer. Paramedics transported Abdelnabi to University Medical Center, where physicians and nursing staff provided emergency treatment. Despite resuscitation attempts, Abdelnabi died at the hospital.
The armed suspect also died during the incident. No additional officers were reported injured, though multiple law enforcement, fire, and emergency medical personnel responded to the scene.
Sheriff Kevin McMahill described Abdelnabi’s service to the community. Abdelnabi served in the Marine Corps from August 2014 to August 2018 and earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and law enforcement administration from Clemson University in 2022. He joined LVMPD in November 2023.
McMahill stated that the officer was not only a police officer but a Marine veteran. McMahill characterized the atmosphere at the department as one of profound grief.
Approximately 200 uniformed LVMPD officers and other law enforcement personnel gathered outside University Medical Center following Abdelnabi’s death. Officers formed a procession as Abdelnabi’s remains were transported to the Clark County coroner’s office.
Governor Joe Lombardo characterized Abdelnabi as one of Nevada’s own in a statement. Lombardo pledged prayers for Abdelnabi’s family and all LVMPD personnel.
Clark County Commission Chair Michael Lombardo directed that flags at county buildings be lowered in Abdelnabi’s honor.
The August 4 shooting marked LVMPD’s ninth officer-involved shooting in 2026. LVMPD’s previous line-of-duty death occurred October 2022 when Officer Truong Thai, 49, was shot while responding to a domestic disturbance call. Tyson Hampton pleaded guilty but mentally ill to first-degree murder and related charges in May 2026. Hampton’s sentencing is scheduled for August 24.
