NORTH LAS VEGAS, NV — North Las Vegas police released body-worn camera footage showing a deadly April 29 officer-involved shooting that occurred following a two-vehicle crash and confrontation with an armed suspect, department officials said.

Police responded shortly after 4:30 p.m. to the intersection of East Gowan Road and North 5th Street after a gray Ford Flex driven by 31-year-old Khalil Normi Jamal Smith collided with another vehicle. A woman and her two children in the other car were treated for minor injuries and transported to a hospital, authorities said.

Body camera video shows Smith acting erratically and aggressively from atop his vehicle, holding a pair of scissors and ignoring repeated commands from Officers Manuel Moreno and Donnie Miranda to drop the sharp object and come down.

After Smith leapt from the roof and advanced toward one of the officers while armed, officers discharged their firearms, striking him, according to police. Despite being wounded, Smith continued to resist commands before officers were able to gain control.

Smith was provided medical aid at the scene and transported to University Medical Center’s trauma center, where he later died from his injuries. The North Las Vegas Police Department placed the involved officers on paid administrative leave, and detectives continue their investigation.
