SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — A theft suspect was killed and two San Francisco police officers were injured Friday morning when a vehicle unconnected to the incident struck all three as they lay in a Nob Hill roadway following a foot pursuit and physical altercation, according to the San Francisco Police Department.
Officers responded at 7:36 a.m. to a reported theft at a Trader Joe’s at California and Hyde streets. According to the department’s statement, officers attempted to arrest the suspect in connection with the alleged theft, but the individual fled on foot. Officers pursued and engaged in a physical altercation that ended with the suspect and both officers on the ground in the roadway, according to graphic video of the incident that circulated on social media.
A Lexus SUV then drove over the three individuals before stopping. Video reviewed by Police1 showed one person lying motionless in the street while one of the officers stood back up as bystanders gathered; the department said the second officer was pinned beneath the vehicle. “Firefighters removed the officer from under the vehicle while paramedics rendered aid and transported all three patients to the hospital,” the SFPD said in its statement. “Despite life-saving efforts, the initial theft suspect, who was struck by the vehicle, succumbed to his injuries and was declared deceased.”
Both officers were transported to a hospital and were being treated for non-life-threatening injuries as of Friday morning. A police department representative told television station KTVU-Fox 2 San Francisco that the vehicle was unrelated to the original theft incident. The station reported that the two injured officers — a rookie officer and a field training officer — were in stable condition. The driver of the Lexus remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation, according to police; no charges or arrest had been publicly announced as of Saturday morning, and the names of those involved had not been released.
Mayor Daniel Lurie addressed the incident in a social media post Friday, saying he had spoken with both officers and was “wishing them a full and speedy recovery.” Lurie added, “Any loss of life is a tragedy. I am grateful to the first responders who acted quickly to render aid to everyone involved.” The San Francisco Police Department said its investigation into the incident is ongoing and asked anyone with information to contact the department at (415) 575-4444 or submit anonymous tips by texting “SFPD” to TIP411.
