PLEASANTVILLE, OH — The Pleasantville Police Department was disbanded after village officials concluded the agency was not established under proper legal authority.
In an April 15 vote, the Pleasantville Village Council approved a measure to abolish the department after learning it may have been created without the public hearings required for levy funding.
All officers employed by the department were let go and must return their equipment, the council confirmed.
A spokesperson for the Ohio Auditor’s Office said the agency is investigating a complaint about the police department, which was founded in 2023.
Pleasantville’s administrative assistant said multiple state agencies are examining the situation, though details of any legal proceedings remain unclear.
Villagers and local leaders must now consider how public safety services will be provided following the department’s dissolution.
