MIAMI — Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Deputy Luis Hernandez won his UFC debut Saturday, submitting opponent Sedriques Dumas with a standing guillotine chokehold within the first minute of the first round, according to NBC South Florida.
The UFC promoted the matchup between Hernandez and Dumas, who has a felony conviction, as “cop vs. convict.” Hernandez, who fought his way into the UFC after competing as an amateur, is the first active sheriff’s deputy in the country to join the organization, according to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office.
The sheriff’s office celebrated the win on social media. “Congratulations to our very own Deputy Hernandez on earning the win in his UFC Fight Night debut!” the department posted on Instagram. “Your MDSO family is celebrating with you!”
Following the fight, Hernandez pushed back against negative online comments directed at his opponent. “All the hate online on my opponent, listen, the guy has a family, and whatever he did in the past, I’m hoping he changed his life, let’s treat him with respect,” Hernandez said.
