WASHINGTON — The Federal Bureau of Investigation announced the seizure of more than 700 drones that entered restricted airspace surrounding World Cup venues during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, according to Director Kash Patel’s public announcement.
The federal government established mandatory no-drone zones around each of the 11 World Cup venues to protect public safety and game operations. According to an FBI news release dated July 15, the bureau had detected approximately 1,600 drones attempting to enter the restricted airspace as of that date. The FBI deployed specialized equipment and personnel to detect, intercept, and seize aircraft operating within the protected zones.
Meghan King, a supervisory special agent in charge of the crisis management program at the FBI Boston Field Office, characterized the enforcement effort as unprecedented. King stated that the bureau utilized advanced drone detection technology, mitigation strategies, and seizure operations to maintain airspace security and public safety. “We are utilizing cutting-edge technology to detect drones flying in restricted airspace, mitigating the threat they pose, and seizing them from operators.”
