BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — A more than 12-hour hostage standoff at a downtown Bakersfield office building ended in the early morning hours of June 3, 2026, when FBI personnel fatally shot the armed suspect who had barricaded himself inside with multiple hostages since the previous afternoon, the Bakersfield Police Department announced.

The incident began on the afternoon of June 2 when officers responded to a reported bomb threat at the Chase Bank building, a four-story office structure with dark-tinted windows located in the city’s downtown core. The building houses both a ground-floor Chase Bank branch and a school district office. Upon arrival, officers established that a male suspect had barricaded himself inside the building with several individuals. A perimeter was immediately established around the area, and the public was warned to stay clear of the scene.

The Bakersfield Police Department’s crisis negotiation team maintained telephone contact with the suspect throughout the standoff. Two hostages were released Tuesday evening before the standoff entered its final hours. Bakersfield police Sgt. Eric Celedon stated Tuesday that the department had committed every available resource to the scene with the goal of achieving the safest possible resolution.

Shortly after midnight, FBI personnel carried out an officer-involved shooting that killed the suspect. The Bakersfield Police Department confirmed the shooting in a formal statement, describing it as involving FBI personnel. All remaining hostages were located inside the building and found to be unharmed.

Several buildings in close proximity to the Chase Bank structure — including Bakersfield City Hall and the police department’s own headquarters, both located approximately one block away — were evacuated as a precautionary measure during the standoff. Portions of surrounding roadways were also temporarily closed. The identity of the suspect had not been released by authorities as of the time of publication, and the investigation remains active.
