HOOVER, ALA. — The Hoover Police Department officially implemented 12-hour patrol shifts to enhance officer wellness and address recruitment challenges by providing more predictable off-duty time and work-life balance.

Under the new shift structure, all patrol officers receive every other Friday, Saturday, and Sunday off, representing a significant change from the department’s previous 8-hour system. In the prior system, weekend days off were allocated based on seniority, requiring newer officers to request time away to secure weekend availability.

Captain Daniel Lowe stated that department leadership reviewed operational procedures to determine how the organization could best serve the public while supporting officer wellbeing. Lowe characterized the shift change as part of broader departmental planning for the department’s future operational needs.

Department officials believe that guaranteed weekend time off will allow officers more predictable opportunity to spend time with family and friends, creating better work-life balance and reducing workplace stress.
