CHICAGO, IL — A Chicago man has been charged with murder and attempted murder in the fatal shooting of one Chicago Police Department officer and the wounding of another at a North Side hospital, officials said.
The shooting occurred April 25 at Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital, where the two officers were escorting a suspect they had taken into custody earlier that day on suspicion of armed robbery, according to police.
Officer John Bartholomew, 38 and a 10-year department veteran, was shot and later pronounced dead. A second officer, 57 with 21 years of service, was critically wounded and remains hospitalized, police said.
The suspect, identified as 26-year-old Alphanso Talley, was charged with murder, attempted murder of a peace officer and a slate of related felonies, including armed robbery and unlawful use of a weapon, the Chicago Police Department said.
Police said the suspect fled the hospital after the shooting but was later taken back into custody. A firearm was recovered in connection with the incident, and authorities continue to investigate how the weapon was accessed inside the facility.
The case remains under active investigation as prosecutors prepare to advance charges and additional court proceedings are scheduled.
