A Newport News man has been charged with multiple felonies related to the shooting of a Hampton police officer early Saturday morning.

Police responded to a report of a single-vehicle wreck at 1:05 a.m. in the 300 block of Woodland Road in Phoebus. As they approached the vehicle on the side of the road, the driver, 31-year-old Tyron Parks, got out. Officers saw he had a gun, according to police.

Parks allegedly fled and shot at additional officers who had responded to the area, striking one of them, police said. Multiple officers returned fire, and Parks was injured. It’s unclear how many officers used their weapons.

Police said Monday the injured officer was treated and released from the hospital.

Parks is charged with five felonies including maiming a law enforcement officer, attempted maiming of a law enforcement officer and other weapons offenses.
