A California Highway Patrol officer assisting a driver along the 22 Freeway in Garden Grove was injured on Sunday evening, Dec. 4, after an SUV collided into his patrol car.

At around 8:45 p.m., the officer had pulled over on the westbound side of the freeway, near the Euclid Street exit, to help a driver who was having mechanical problems, Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Jose Perez told OnScene TV reporters at the scene. While the officer was inside his patrol car, an SUV collided with the vehicles, trapping the officer.

Firefighters had to extricate the officer from his vehicle and he was taken to a hospital, Perez said. Details on his injuries were not immediately available.

Two others inside the second vehicle were not injured.

It was not clear whether the driver of the SUV was injured or taken into police custody. Westbound lanes were closed Sunday night while authorities continued their investigation.
