FAIRWAY, KAN. — A Johnson County jury sentenced Andrea Cothran to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole Wednesday following her May 14 conviction for her role in the fatal shooting of Fairway Police Officer Jonah Oswald.
Cothran was convicted of first-degree felony murder, aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, fleeing or attempting to elude law enforcement, theft and reckless driving, according to court records.
Officer Oswald, a 29-year-old father of two, was fatally shot in August 2023 during an attempted arrest at a QuikTrip bathroom in Mission as law enforcement tracked two suspected vehicle thieves.
Cothran and Shannon Marshall, 40, also of Tennessee, allegedly led officers on a high-speed chase through the area in a Jeep stolen from a Lenexa gas station. Law enforcement personnel located the pair at the QuikTrip convenience store location.
An officer observed Cothran and Marshall heading toward the bathrooms. Cothran was arrested in the hallway after she informed officers that Marshall was in the men’s bathroom.
Marshall refused to exit the restroom stall, and law enforcement personnel were initially unaware the suspect was armed. Officer Oswald entered the bathroom to arrest Marshall, accompanied by two Kansas Highway Patrol troopers.
As Officer Oswald opened the stall door, Marshall discharged a single shot that struck the officer. Marshall was subsequently shot by law enforcement personnel at the scene and died from injuries sustained during the encounter.
Officer Oswald was transported to a hospital where he died the following day from injuries sustained in the shooting.
