NEW YORK, NY — A man who slashed three people with a machete inside the 42nd Street-Grand Central subway station was shot and killed by New York Police Department officers Saturday morning, authorities said.
The incident unfolded around 9:40 a.m. when a civilian alerted officers to a man armed with a large knife who had already injured three commuters on the subway platforms in Midtown Manhattan.
NYPD detectives working a transit detail encountered the suspect on the platform and ordered him at least 20 times to drop the weapon, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a news conference.
The suspect refused to comply and advanced toward officers with the machete extended, prompting one of the detectives to fire at him. The suspect was transported to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The three victims — a 65-year-old man, a 70-year-old woman and an 84-year-old man — were taken to hospitals with injuries officials said were serious but not believed to be life-threatening.
NYPD officials described the attacks as appearing random. The department said it will conduct an internal review and release body-worn camera footage as part of the investigation.
