The charges were announced following a comprehensive investigation into the cause of the explosion at the warehouse in Mundelein, which had been storing and distributing illegal fireworks, prosecutors said.
Law enforcement officials allege that the suspects were involved in the unlawful storage and sale of high-hazard fireworks, creating dangerous conditions that ultimately led to the deadly blast that also caused extensive property damage in the surrounding community.
The former sheriff’s lieutenant and the other four defendants were each charged with multiple counts, including murder, and remain in custody pending further legal proceedings, according to court filings.
Prosecutors said the charges reflect evidence gathered during the investigation, including testimony and physical evidence linking the suspects to the warehouse operations and hazardous conditions prior to the explosion.
Court officials said arraignments and pretrial hearings will be scheduled in the coming weeks as the case proceeds through the legal system.
