SACRAMENTO, CA — The Sacramento Police Department has released body-worn camera footage showing the moments leading up to a March 10 officer-involved shooting of a man armed with a knife near a school campus in the Northgate area of Sacramento.
Dispatchers received a 911 call just before 6:45 p.m. reporting a man on the campus of an elementary school armed with a knife and chasing people, according to police.
A Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office helicopter crew located a man matching the suspect’s description in front of the school and ordered him multiple times to drop the knife before officers arrived on scene.
Body camera video shows officers repeatedly commanding the suspect to surrender and drop the knife. Police said the suspect continued advancing toward officers, prompting at least one officer to fire their weapon while a less-lethal device was also deployed.
Officers detained the man, provided medical aid at the scene and he was taken to a hospital. Police said the suspect was later released from medical care and booked into jail on multiple assault with a deadly weapon charges.
The Sacramento Police Department continues to investigate the use of force and circumstances surrounding the incident.
