BOSTON, MA — Four staff members at the Massachusetts State Police Academy have been indicted in connection with the 2024 death of a recruit following training exercises, authorities announced Monday.

A Worcester County grand jury returned the indictments, charging Sgt. Jennifer Penton and Troopers Edwin Rodriguez, David Montanez and Casey LaMonte with involuntary manslaughter and causing serious bodily injury to a person participating in training.

The charges stem from the September 2024 death of 25-year-old recruit Enrique Delgado-Garcia, a member of the 90th Recruit Training Troop, who suffered fatal injuries during a boxing exercise at the academy in New Braintree in Worcester County.

Penton also faces an additional perjury charge for allegedly making false statements to the grand jury, officials said.

The indictments follow an independent investigation led by an outside attorney appointed by the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office and a special statewide grand jury that reviewed evidence and testimony over several months.

Summonses for arraignment proceedings are expected to be issued in the coming weeks, with formal court dates yet to be scheduled.
