A 19-year-old driver was arrested after leading Florida Highway Patrol troopers on a dangerous wrong-way pursuit through a construction zone.
The chase began when said troopers tried to pull over a white Honda driven by Abel Campos around 4 p.m. Wednesday after the vehicle recklessly drove along the shoulder on Interstate 95 in Miami-Dade County, WTVJ-TV reports. Campos allegedly maneuvered through congested traffic, entered a construction area and repeatedly drove against the flow of traffic in an effort to elude troopers.
In recently released dashboard camera footage, a trooper is seen performing a PIT maneuver to stop Campos as he drove through a construction zone. The first attempt was unsuccessful, but the trooper eventually was able to ram Campos and disable his vehicle.
Campos was taken into custody, and a trooper asked him why he fled. Campos responded that he didn’t have insurance.
“That’s just a ticket,” replied the trooper. “Now look what you did, you know how many peoples’ lives you put at risk?”
No injuries were reported in the incident.
Campos faces charges of fleeing and attempting to elude law enforcement at high speed and reckless driving with property damage.
