HOUSTON, TX — Newly released body-worn camera footage captures the chaotic moment when Houston police officers were fired upon by two teenagers after responding to reports of a break-in at a vacant apartment. The confrontation led to a shootout, leaving a 17-year-old boy wounded and a 15-year-old girl injured by broken glass.

Break-In Leads to Deadly Standoff

The incident unfolded on Saturday at the Park De Ville apartment complex in southeast Houston. Officers were dispatched after the complex’s management team received complaints from residents about a break-in, reported through the Neighborhood app, Assistant Chief J. Skelton said during a press briefing.

Upon arrival, officers accompanied the apartment’s management to the unit in question. Using a key, the management team unlocked the door, at which point officers immediately encountered an armed suspect.

“Officers knocked on the door, and management entered with their key. The officers were immediately met with a suspect holding a weapon,” Skelton explained. “They retreated and took tactical positions outside the apartment.”

Gunfire Erupts as Suspects Attempt to Escape

Instead of surrendering, the two teens tried to escape by breaking a high window at the back of the apartment. After making it to the ground, they allegedly opened fire on the officers.

“As soon as they got down, they immediately started shooting at our officers,” Skelton stated.

In response, officers returned fire, striking the 17-year-old in the upper torso. The 15-year-old girl, though not shot, suffered a laceration from the broken glass.

Suspects Had Prior Warrants

Both teens were transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where the 17-year-old underwent surgery. The 15-year-old was treated for her injuries and remains in medical care.

Further investigation revealed that both suspects had outstanding warrants related to prior home invasions and other violent crimes. Skelton emphasized growing concerns about youth involvement in criminal activity.

“It’s very alarming,” he said. “This is something we’re seeing more often in our city, and we’re working hard to combat it.”

Officers Placed on Leave Pending Investigation

The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, in accordance with department policy, while the Harris County District Attorney’s Office conducts an investigation into the incident.

The case remains under review as law enforcement officials work to determine the full details of the shootout.
